Kuwait Stock Footage: License It or Shoot Your Own?
Every January we get the same call. An agency needs establishing shots of Kuwait City by Thursday, the campaign is approved, and nobody budgeted a shoot. The fix is usually Kuwait stock footage — and about half the time it is the wrong fix. Licensed clips are fast, cheap and perfectly legitimate for some jobs, useless for others. Here is what they cost in KWD, where the licences catch brands out, and when a half-day of custom b-roll is the better buy.
What you can actually find in Kuwait stock footage libraries
Search Getty, Adobe Stock, Storyblocks, Pond5 or Artgrid and you get a usable but narrow set. The libraries are deep on postcard Kuwait and almost empty on working Kuwait.
Plentiful:
- Kuwait Towers at golden hour, from the water and from the air.
- Al Hamra and the Kuwait City skyline, wide, usually shot from Shuwaikh or the Gulf Road.
- Souq Mubarakiya — spice stalls, alleyways, hands handling dates.
- The flag, National Day crowds, desert plates, oil infrastructure.
Thin to non-existent:
- Street level in Salmiya, Hawally, Farwaniya, Mirqab or Jahra — where your customers actually live.
- Interiors of Kuwaiti businesses: showrooms, clinics, warehouses, co-op branches, offices in Sharq.
- People in Kuwaiti dress doing anything specific — signing, unboxing, ordering, driving to work.
- Anything shot in the last 18 months. Facades change, The Avenues and 360 Mall keep renovating, and a dated clip reads as dated to a local viewer instantly.
One search note: Kuwait buyers hunt in both languages, and the Arabic terms surface different results. Run مقاطع فيديو أرشيفية (archive clips) and التصوير الجوي (aerial filming) before concluding a shot does not exist.
How much does Kuwait stock footage cost?
Budget 8–20 KWD per clip from a mid-tier subscription library, and 25–75 KWD for a single 4K clip from a premium library like Getty on a standard commercial licence. Subscription plans run roughly 15–90 KWD a month depending on resolution and download volume. Broadcast or unlimited-territory extensions push a single premium clip past 150 KWD.
What moves the number:
- Licence breadth. Web and social only is the cheap tier. Add TV, cinema or out-of-home and the price multiplies. If the clip is going on a DOOH screen on the Gulf Road, you need the wider licence.
- Exclusivity. Licences are non-exclusive, so your competitor on Salem Al Mubarak Street can license the same Kuwait Towers shot next week. The pool of good Kuwait clips is small, so that happens more than people expect.
- Clip count. Six to eight premium clips — 200–450 KWD — is already shoot money.
When is a custom b-roll shoot cheaper than licensing?
At roughly eight clips. A half-day ground b-roll shoot in Kuwait City runs 150–300 KWD and lands 30–60 usable clips; a full day with a drone and two locations is 350–650 KWD and lands 60–100. Per clip that is under 10 KWD, with no licence expiry and nothing shared with a competitor.
Shoot custom, not licensed, when any of these apply:
- Your product, premises, staff or signage has to appear.
- The footage will anchor a campaign running longer than one quarter.
- You need a consistent look across a series — licensed clips come from different cameras, lenses and colourists and never cut together cleanly.
- Your client expects to own the asset at the end. You cannot hand over a licensed clip as something they own.
- The brief is Kuwait-specific in a way libraries do not cover: a co-op aisle, a diwaniya, a majlis, a specific neighbourhood.
License, don't shoot, when you need two or three generic establishing wides inside a deadline, the budget is under 100 KWD, or the shot is impractical — archival, restricted airspace, weather you cannot schedule.
The licence traps that catch Kuwait brands
Editorial-only clips
A large share of Kuwait footage is marked editorial use only — news and commentary, not advertising. National Day crowds, a branded storefront, a government building. Put one in a paid ad and you are outside the licence. Check the label before you cut, not after the client approves.
People, property and logos
Commercial licences require model releases for recognisable faces and property releases for some locations. Library footage of Kuwait crowds frequently has neither. The same release discipline we apply on our own shoots — covered in our guide to casting talent in Kuwait, rates and releases — does not transfer to a clip you downloaded.
Drone clips of Kuwait
Aerials are the most-licensed Kuwait category and the most legally awkward: some library clips over Kuwait City were flown without permission. That is the uploader's problem, not yours, but it means the shot you want may not exist legally — and if you fly it yourself, read our breakdown of drone cinematography laws in Kuwait first. Commercial filming needs a Ministry of Information permit and public land needs Kuwait Municipality permission, both covered in our post on filming permits in Kuwait. Allow two to three weeks, longer before 25–26 February.
Resale and handover
Agencies get caught here. A standard licence covers one end client and one project; reusing the clip for a second Kuwait client, or billing it as an owned deliverable, breaches it. The rights logic matches soundtracks — our notes on music licensing for video in Kuwait apply word for word to footage.
Build your own Kuwait b-roll library instead
The brands that stop paying for Kuwait stock footage are the ones that banked a library once. One planned day between November and March — the only stretch where daylight exteriors are comfortable, since May to September pushes outdoor work to the hour either side of dawn and dusk — gives you three years of cutaways.
A day that earns its keep covers:
- Two skyline wides, one from the Gulf Road and one from across the bay, at golden hour.
- Street-level traffic and pedestrian plates in Salmiya and Sharq, shot Sunday or Monday morning when the Friday–Saturday weekend crowds are gone.
- Your own premises, exterior and interior, lit properly.
- Hands, product, packaging — macro, on sticks, no talent, no releases needed.
- Establishing shots for Ahmadi, Jahra or the Kuwait Free Trade Zone if you operate outside the city.
- Vertical 9:16 versions of every setup, shot natively rather than cropped later.
Shoot 4K 50fps in a log profile, tag every clip on ingest, and keep a proxy set your agency can browse. Unlabelled footage on a drive is not a library; it is an archive nobody opens. If February is your season, shoot this year's flags for next year's campaign — the Kuwait National Day video production playbook sets out that calendar.
Kuwait stock footage: questions we get asked
Can I use Kuwait stock footage in a paid Meta or TikTok ad?
Yes, if the clip carries a commercial licence covering paid social. Editorial-only clips do not, and that is the most common breach we see here. Check the tier, keep the licence PDF on file, and make sure the licence is held by whoever is running the ad spend.
Is footage of Kuwait on YouTube free to use?
No. A video being public is not a licence. Clipping someone's Kuwait drone reel into a brand ad is straightforward infringement, and local creators do pursue it. The only safe free sources are explicit Creative Commons or public-domain libraries, and even those often require attribution you cannot give in a 15-second ad.
How fast can you deliver custom Kuwait b-roll?
For locations needing no permit — your premises, private interiors, pre-cleared spots — two to four working days from brief to graded clips. Public locations and anything aerial wait on permits, so plan two to three weeks. Pulls from our existing library can turn around inside 48 hours.
Do you license your own Kuwait footage to agencies?
Yes. We hold a graded Kuwait library — skyline, aerials, street, industrial, retail interiors — and license clips to agencies that need one or two shots rather than a shoot day. Pricing sits below the premium libraries, the shots are current, and the releases and permits are in order.
Which one does your campaign need?
The test is simple: if the shot could belong to any brand, license it. If the shot is the reason anyone believes you, shoot it. Most Kuwait campaigns need both — two licensed establishing wides and six custom clips nobody else can run. Send us your shot list and deadline and we will mark it up in KWD, line by line, the same day. Get in touch.
