Music Video Production Kuwait: Costs, Permits & Crew
Most music video production Kuwait briefs reach my studio the same way: the track is mastered, the release date is three weeks out, and nobody budgeted for the film. The choice by then is between something rushed on a rooftop in Salmiya and something that lands two months after the song stopped mattering. Here is what a video costs in KWD, which licences you need before the camera leaves the case, and the calendar that decides whether you shoot or apologise.
How much does a music video cost in Kuwait?
Budget KWD 400–900 for a single-location performance video, KWD 1,500–4,000 for a narrative piece across two or three locations, and KWD 6,000–15,000 once a label wants a full art department, a cast and a two-day schedule. The camera is almost never what moves the number. Locations, permits and how many people have to be fed for twelve hours are.
- KWD 400–900 — the performance video. One day, one controlled space: a studio, a warehouse in Shuwaikh, a rooftop. Director, DOP, one gaffer, playback, a grade. You get a 3–4 minute cut plus four or five vertical edits for Reels and TikTok.
- KWD 1,500–4,000 — the narrative video. Two shoot days, two or three locations, a small cast, art direction and wardrobe, a drone block if the permit lands. Most independent Kuwaiti and Gulf artists sit here.
- KWD 6,000–15,000 — the label production. Full crew, casting, location fees, lighting trucks, a production designer and a colourist who is not also the editor. Usually a regional release.
Two line items catch artists out. Location fees: a private villa or venue quotes KWD 100–400 a filming day, before the deposit. Playback: a PA loud enough to perform against runs KWD 30–80 a day and is missing from half the budgets I see.
Music video production Kuwait: the crew and kit you are paying for
A video that looks expensive is usually just one that was properly staffed. Briefs go wrong when someone hires one person with a camera and expects a five-person result. Day rates in Kuwait sit roughly like this.
- Director / DOP — KWD 120–300 a day. On small videos these are one person, which works until the performance needs directing while the camera needs operating.
- Focus puller (1st AC) — KWD 40–80. The cheapest insurance on any shoot with movement and shallow depth of field.
- Gaffer plus one spark — KWD 60–120 combined. Night exteriors on the Gulf Road or in Sharq are a lighting job, not a camera job.
- Art direction and wardrobe — KWD 80–250 including the buy. Cutting it is the most visible saving you can make, and not in a good way.
- Licensed drone operator — KWD 80–150 a block. Flying without clearance in Kuwait is not a grey area.
- Edit, grade and sound sync — KWD 200–700, depending on cut count and whether the grade is a look or a rescue.
Camera and lighting rent separately at roughly KWD 60–200 a day for a cinema body, lenses, a small lighting kit and grip; our breakdown of video equipment rental in Kuwait and what to book covers what is worth the line item. If the video has a cast, build in time for releases rather than signatures grabbed at wrap — casting talent in Kuwait, rates and releases applies here exactly as it does to commercials.
Do you need a permit to film a music video in Kuwait?
Yes, for anything beyond a private interior. A professional crew needs Ministry of Information clearance, and public ground — the Gulf Road, the Salmiya seafront, a pavement in Hawally — needs Kuwait Municipality permission on top. Allow two to three weeks, and treat the approval date as your shoot date rather than the other way round.
- Private property is the fast path. A studio, villa or warehouse in Shuwaikh or the Kuwait Free Trade Zone needs the owner's written permission and nothing else, which is why most low-budget videos here are shot indoors.
- Malls are private but bureaucratic. The Avenues and 360 Mall approve named dates and windows, usually outside trading hours, and they will ask what the content is.
- Content matters, not just location. Lyrics and visuals are reviewed here, and a video that clears in Dubai will not automatically clear in Kuwait. Flag anything borderline before you build a set around it.
- Drones are a separate approval. Never schedule an aerial as the only way to open the video; shoot a ground alternative the same day.
- Landmarks have their own gatekeepers. Souq Mubarakiya and the ground around Kuwait Towers are filmed constantly, but always with paperwork and almost always at sunrise. Our guide to filming permits in Kuwait and what brands need lists the documents and lead times.
Where and when to shoot in Kuwait
The location list is shorter than people expect and better than they think. Shuwaikh and Ardiya warehouses give you scale and blackout control. The desert past Kabd and toward Jahra gives an empty horizon forty minutes from Kuwait City. Mirqab and Sharq rooftops give a skyline at blue hour, and Souq Mubarakiya gives texture no set dresser can build. Stack two in one day and the video looks like it cost three times what it did. Timing matters more here than in most markets:
- May to September kills outdoor filming. Exteriors run 5am to about 7:30am or after sunset, and performance takes are brutal in that heat. Plan ambitious outdoor videos for November to March.
- Ramadan pauses music releases. Promotion goes quiet, so shoot during Ramadan and release at Eid, when the market reopens all at once.
- National Day and Liberation Day on 25–26 February drive an annual spike in patriotic song videos, with Hala Febrayer across the month. Shoot in December — crews and Kuwait City locations are booked out by late January.
- The Friday–Saturday weekend shapes everything: crew availability, location access, and the Wednesday–Thursday evening window when new music actually gets shared.
One detail that costs nothing and is routinely ignored: Kuwaiti audiences search in both Arabic and English, often in the same session, and they type فيديو كليب (video clip, the standard Gulf term for a music video) far more than the English phrase. Title and tag your release in both. Artists releasing across Saudi, the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain should keep Kuwait as the home geo and version the metadata per market.
FAQ: music video production in Kuwait
How long does a music video take from brief to delivery?
Three to five weeks is realistic. Allow one to two weeks for treatment, casting, locations and permits, one or two shoot days, then seven to ten working days for the edit, grade, vertical cutdowns and one round of notes. A single-location performance video can compress to two weeks if the permits are not needed.
Can we shoot a music video on the Gulf Road or at Kuwait Towers?
Yes, with Kuwait Municipality permission and Ministry of Information clearance for the crew. Both locations are filmed regularly, but approvals take two to three weeks and the practical window is sunrise, before traffic and heat. Never build a treatment that only works at one landmark without a fallback.
Is it cheaper to shoot in Kuwait or Dubai?
Kuwait is cheaper on crew and location fees, and slower on permits. Dubai offers deeper crew pools and faster approvals at a higher day rate. For a Kuwait-market release, shooting here is both cheaper and more authentic — audiences recognise their own city instantly, and that beats a generic skyline.
What should the artist deliver before the shoot?
The final mastered track, not a rough mix. Edits are cut to a waveform, and if the arrangement changes afterwards the timing of every performance take is wrong. Also send the release date, the platforms, and whether you need a vertical-first cut — that decision changes how we frame on the day.
Planning your release
The videos that work here are rarely the expensive ones. They are the ones where someone locked the release date first and worked backwards through permits, heat and Ramadan to a shoot date that was actually achievable. A track and a month is usually enough. A track and a week is workable too, if you say so up front.
Send the track, the release date and where the song needs to land. Contact the studio and we will tell you what it costs and whether the calendar works before anyone writes a treatment.
